![]() ![]() One of the worst hydro-meteorological hazards to hit Southeast Asia in the last decade is Typhoon Haiyan (known as Yolanda in the Philippines), which struck on 8 November 2013. In 2021 alone, the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) recorded that out of the 1,406 disasters that occurred in the ASEAN region, 99% were classified as hydro-meteorological in nature. The ASEAN region is especially prone to hydro-meteorological phenomena due to its geographic setting and climate. Hydro-meteorological hazards can also influence other risks such as landslides, wildfires, and epidemics. These types of hazards include tropical cyclones (typhoons and hurricanes), floods (and flash floods), drought, thunderstorms, coastal storm surges, and heatwaves. They account for over 75% of damages related to disasters, including casualties, economic losses, infrastructure damage, and disruption to everyday life. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) defines hydro-meteorological hazards as “the process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological, or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage”. Sometimes, these hazards act in combination, resulting in the phenomena known as hydro-meteorological hazards. Natural hazards stem from sources ranging from geological, meteorological, hydrological to oceanic, among others. Living in Southeast Asia, not a week goes by without hearing of an earthquake, flood, tornado, or other natural hazard occurring somewhere in the region.

![]() Fighting regularly takes place between Israel and Palestinian factions in Gaza, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Gazans have seen Israeli strikes ravage the strip on several occasions since Israeli forces withdrew from the territory in 2005. The massive cam lever on the head makes the pump really easy to attach and remove from your valves. The SwitchHitter II head does the job it’s supposed to do and has worked effectively on both Presta and Schrader valves. If you did want a pump that was more orientated to one end or the other of the volume:pressure ratio, Specialized do the Air Tool Floor Pump in HP (high pressure 252cc stroke volume, 145 psi max) and MTB (508cc, 40 psi max pressure) versions. But neither of these things have been an issue, the Air Tool Comp handles it all with ease. The downside of a do-it-all pump is that – relatively – you’ll need a few more pumps to inflate a gravel tire and a bit more oomph for higher pressures in a road tire than if you have a specific pump. As the variation was pretty consistent across pressures then it’s one that’s easy to adjust to. The gauge was really easy to read although, in comparison to readings from a Topeak digital gauge, were a little higher: Air Tool 40 psi = Topeak 35 psi, 60 psi = 54 psi, 80 psi = 73 psi. I’ve have also managed to seat tubeless tires with the Air Tool but not consistently. My MTB tires have pumped up quickly enough and I’ve had no issues getting my road tires up to the max 120 psi pressure the pump can handle. The Air Tool is really stable in use and pumping is quick and easy. While there isn’t a groove built into the handle, the hose does hook over it.Ī replacement rubber seal for the SwitchHitter 2 head is included to help prolong usability of the pump.(Image credit: Rachel Sokal) Specialized Air Tool Comp Floor Pump: The ride There are mounting points either side of the collar and a clip to attach the hose to itself, to enable you to stow it away. There is a little play between the shaft and pump body at full extension – pressure builds from early in the stroke, no matter what height the stroke begins from. You simply fully insert the valve, lift the locking lever and away you go. Specialized’s SwitchHitter 2 valve head accepts Presta and Schrader valves with no need to select or adjust anything. At 109cm (42.9in), it’s long enough to reach either wheel of a bike suspended in a repair stand. The hose stems from just ahead of the gauge as the user looks down at the base. It has drillings and grip tape designed to improve traction with any footwear in any conditions. The steel base effectively forms a broad tripod, offering stability on rough ground. Pressure readings between the pump’s own gauge and my digital gauge, used as a benchmark, were consistent as far as could be judged on the pump’s analogue dial.Ī target pressure indicator is present on the gauge’s bezel, but I found it wasn’t essential to use it because the gauge is large and clearly visible despite being mounted at the base. The two-stage gauge has larger graduations for more accurate pressure adjustment from 0-30psi, switching to lower degrees of rotation for higher pressures. ![]() ![]() These are modal figures taken from a number of attempts at each tyre size. ![]() The Air Tool Comp needed 17 strokes to get to 80psi in a 700 x 26c road bike tyre, 25 strokes to achieve 50psi for a 700x40mm gravel bike tyre and 19 to hit 20psi in a 29×2.4in mountain bike tyre. While the very smallest hands may struggle to encircle the 3.5cm-tall handle, most will enjoy using the Air Tool Comp. However, the fact that this one is so comfortable suddenly makes those that aren’t somehow less appealing. You might not consider that a pump should be comfortable to use. Its 5cm-wide upper face provides plenty of support. The large two-stage gauge is easy to read. It’s unique, strange and fun to watch though. While the production history of the film is interesting, that does not give it a pass for the aimless story and mediocre-at-best acting. However, that hardly makes it a fantastic film. The fact that this movie could be filmed, edited and distributed without legal repercussions is kind of amazing in and of itself. There are a few slips in quality here and there but nothing unusually bad for a low-budget movie. This required the crew to use small handheld cameras and no lighting equipment for many of the scenes.Īll of this considered, the cinematography and audio are surprisingly good. Thanks to the director’s use of guerilla filmmaking they shot large portions of the film in Disney World with zero permission from the Big Mouse. ![]() Now, I know what you’re thinking: why would Disney allow people to film a low-budget horror movie involving their theme park? Answer: they didn’t. The side characters and their greasy wigs give a painfully lousy performance – the kind that used to be reserved for cheesy 1980s drug PSAs. I would normally tally that up as horror parody, but the tone of the film is too creepy for this to be a joke. A few of the side characters (including a former Disney princess performer and an obese hillbilly in a scooter) are understandably cartoonish (it is a horror film about Disney World, after all), but this is more campy than scary. Abramsohn as Jim does a decent job of portraying a man losing it in a theme park. The acting as a whole is nothing spectacular, but it’s serviceable. I will give the plot this though: it’s pretty darn unpredictable. The numerous plot diversions are pretty distracting and pointless. For example, there’s a side plot involving a former Disney princess performer becoming obsessed with Jim’s daughter that goes nowhere. Plot points begin and end with no significance to the larger story. I have no issue with strangeness in a movie, but this one left me asking how much of it was even necessary. Soon thereafter, he begins to lose his mind.” That minimal description made me think this was just going to be a standard B-movie.īut if you know what you’re getting into, maybe the last third of the movie might not seem quite as, well, weird. My utter confusion about how crazy-pants this movie gets can be attributed to the plot provided on Netflix – a mere “on the last day of a family vacation at Disney World, Jim learns that he’s lost his job. It’s more like the director really wants you to know he watched “Eraserhead” this weekend (and he totally gets it). However, this horror flick never becomes surreal in an immersive sense. It’s relatively easy to follow, but there’s a giant black cloud of “WHY?” hanging over the viewer’s head.Īfter reading the description and watching the first couple of scenes, I was expecting this low-budget flick to go along a “The Shining”-meets-slasher-film route, but then the slow burn of surreality kicks in and, before you know it, the movie straps you in for a one-way trip to Crazytown. That’s not to say that the plot of the movie is confusing. ![]() Thus begins his descent into madness, as well as the audience’s descent into a disorienting 90 minutes. The film follows a husband and father of two, Jim White (played by Roy Abramsohn), who is planning on enjoying his last day of vacation at Disney World with his family when he receives a call telling him that he has been fired from his job. Have you ever just sat there and wondered what in the name of sweet you just saw? I’m assuming the name for this particular emotion is “Escape From Tomorrow,” coincidentally also the title of an independent horror movie you can find on Netflix. ![]() Supported Systems: Windows 10, Windows 8. This study sheds light on previously unknown versatility of chain elongating microbes and provides new avenues for optimizing (waste) bioconversion for hexanoate production. This was not observed before acetate depletion or in presence of low concentrations (40–60 mCmol L −1) of butyrate, suggesting a stabilizing or regulatory role of butyrate or butyrate-related catabolic intermediates. After this, transient production of either acetate and butyrate or butyrate and hexanoate was observed, requiring a putative reversal of the Rnf complex. When only ethanol and no external electron acceptor was supplied, stable ethanol to hexanoate conversion could be maintained until 60–90 mCmol L −1 of hexanoate was produced. In experiments with an initial ethanol-to-acetate ratio of 6:1, acetate depletion occurred after ± 35 h of fermentation, which triggered a metabolic shift to direct conversion of ethanol to hexanoate despite the availability of butyrate (± 40 mCmol L −1). ![]() Frequent liquid sampling combined with high-resolution off-gas measurements allowed to monitor metabolic behavior.
